The short answer: the ideal wind speed for most kites is 8โ25 mph (13โ40 km/h). Below that there isn't enough lift; above it, control gets dangerous.

- Under 5 mph โ Dead calm. A heavy kite won't lift at all. Give it a miss.
- 5โ8 mph โ Marginal. Big lightweight single-line kites can fly, but you'll be running.
- 8โ25 mph โ Ideal for most kites. Strong, steady lift with manageable pull.
- 25โ35 mph โ Strong. Experts only; use a smaller kite or a delta designed for wind.
- 35+ mph โ Kite-eating weather. Lines snap, frames bend. Stay home.
Gusts matter more than you'd think. A steady 15 mph is far easier than 8 mph with gusts to 25 โ the kite luffs, then gets yanked. As a rule of thumb, if gusts are more than double the sustained wind, conditions are lumpy.

A tiny diamond from a beach shop needs less than 10 mph. A large power kite needs 15 mph plus, and a kitesurfing kite only starts working around 12โ15 mph. Check your kite's recommended range โ it's usually printed on the bag or the spar.
Other conditions to watch
Rain soaks the sail and makes a kite heavy and sluggish; thunderstorms are a hard no because wet lines and kites conduct lightning. High humidity, low cloud and sea breezes near coasts also change how the wind feels on the ground.
