Before any design, learn the two things that decide whether a home-made kite climbs or crashes:

Kite 1 โ€” the classic diamond (easiest)

Kite 2 โ€” the paper sled (no dowels)

A sled kite is just a folded sheet of paper or thin plastic with a pocket along the front edge for a drinking straw. It has no spars at all โ€” the wind inflates the pocket and holds it open. Cheap, crash-proof and great for kids learning the bridle trick.

Kite 3 โ€” the quick delta

For a light-wind delta, use two longer spars (90 cm) meeting at the nose with a wide 60 cm crossbar near the rear, and a big plastic sail. Bigger and lighter than the diamond, so it climbs in weaker wind โ€” the trade-off is more frame to break.

Test it, then adjust

Home-made kites almost never fly first try. If it dives, move the bridle point up. If it yaws and flips, add tail or check the crossbar bow. If it won't lift at all, the wind is too light for that kite โ€” check today's wind and pick a day in the 8โ€“15 mph band.
