Why the limit exists

Kites on 100+ m of line reach well into the airspace that aircraft use on approach and take-off. A small kite striking a windscreen or getting sucked into an engine is not a drill — it's a serious aviation incident. Pilots can't see thin lines, and they can't swerve for a kite.

• US FAA: kites above 150 ft are regulated; flying within 5 miles of an airport is prohibited
• UK CAA: don't fly a kite within 8 km of an airport or airfield
• Never fly in controlled airspace, near flight paths, or where aircraft are visible
• Never fly at night or in low visibility where pilots won't see you
